Responding to the UK government’s announcement of £17million in aid for Gaza, an ActionAid UK spokesperson said:
"After 15 months of war, people in Gaza have lost everything, so the UK’s announcement of more aid to help address the staggering humanitarian need is welcome. For this support to reach people as quickly and effectively as possible, it is vital that more trucks are allowed into Gaza, that all land borders – including the crucial Rafah crossing – are opened immediately. We welcome the government’s support for UNRWA – the backbone of the humanitarian response in Gaza – and join it in insisting that the agency is permitted to continue its lifesaving work.
“From day one of this crisis, Palestinian organisations – and in particular women’s rights and women-led organisations – have led the humanitarian response in Gaza, adapting to rapidly changing circumstances to provide urgent support. We urge the government to channel its funding through these organisations in order to ensure the needs of women and girls, who have been particularly impacted and whose needs are often overlooked, are met.”
