How your gift could help women and girls
Gulshanara, 45, is a grandmother and a leader in Ghoraghat, northern Bangladesh. As president of the women's farmers' group at the community seed bank, she has become a beacon of sustainable farming.
Ten years ago, Gulshanara attended her first meeting with the women's farmers group, learning how to create income sustainably. With a grant from ActionAid, she bought land and diversified her farm to include cattle, goats, poultry, and fish. She now grows over 17 varieties of vegetables and spices using organic methods.
Although food costs have "shot up astronomically," Gulshanara and her group of 38 women have managed to meet their families' needs and sell surplus produce at fair prices.
Now Gulshanara and her family have their own farmhouse, complete with a courtyard where ducks and chickens roam freely. ActionAid's training has been crucial for her.
"I’m a lot stronger than before. I stand tall now."
