"For Gazans facing yet another night of bombardment, the Conservative and Labour Party's calls for a ‘temporary pause’ is simply not enough."
Halima Begum, CEO of ActionAid UK said; "For Gazans facing yet another night of bombardment, the Conservative and Labour Party's calls for a ‘temporary pause’ is simply not enough for people who are suffering an entirely avoidable humanitarian catastrophe.A temporary pause does not allow us to fully meet the Geneva Convention of unimpeded access to aid for civilians; it may allow humanitarian assistance today, but it permits more bombs tomorrow.
As humanitarians, we cannot sit idly by while politicians deliberate on how much loss of civilian life is stomachable before calling for a ceasefire. We know at ActionAid that aid cannot safely be delivered without a ceasefire, and that aid is vitally needed. A lack of water and fuel is now critical; waterborne diseases are spreading, and people are drinking seawater. Combined with the increasing overcrowding, there is now a serious risk of deadly infectious diseases spreading. Under constant bombardment, there is no safe place to go. We are calling on our leaders to do the right thing, not just for Gazans and Israelis, but for the world."
