Our response to new Prime Minister announcement; we call on Liz Truss to keep her promises to women and girls around the world.
In response to the announcement of the UK's new Prime Minister, ActionAid UK's Deputy Director of Advocacy, Hannah Bond, said:
“As Prime Minister, Liz Truss must keep her promises to women and girls around the world. In her last role as the Secretary of State for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Truss committed to putting women and girls’ rights at the heart of foreign policy and reinstating the previously cut funds for gender equality.
"She is well aware that around the world, women and girls are continuing to bear the brunt of conflicts, the climate emergency, the food and water crisis in East Africa and the cost of living crisis – it is crucial she stands by her commitments to them as leader.
“This means urgently reinstating the UK’s legal obligation to spend 0.7% of GNI on aid. The Prime Minister must also ensure that the government’s Women and Girls strategy, written by her former department, delivers meaningful change.
The strategy must provide adequate funding and be developed together with the feminist movements on the frontline of the world’s most pressing crises who are best placed to determine what support women and girls need.”
